Cold DM Templates

12 LinkedIn Cold DM Templates That Get Replies

The connection request gets you in the door. The first DM decides whether they ever reply. These are the openers I use after a fresh accept — short, specific, and built to start a real conversation, not pitch on message one.

1. The 'Why I Reached Out'

When to use: First DM after a fresh connection accept.

Hey {First} — thanks for connecting. Reason I reached out: I work with {their role} on {specific problem}. Curious how you're handling that at {Company} right now?

Why it works: Tells them why immediately. Ends with a real question, not a pitch.

2. The Post Reaction

When to use: They posted something in the last 14 days.

{First}, your post on {topic} — especially the line about {detail} — matched something I've been seeing with {their role}. How's that actually playing out for you?

Why it works: Specific reference. Invites a conversation, not a call.

3. The Pattern Observation

When to use: You've spotted a recurring problem in their niche.

Hey {First}, been talking to a lot of {their role} lately and one pattern keeps coming up: {problem}. Wondering if you're seeing the same thing at {Company}?

Why it works: Frames you as the person who talks to many of their peers. Low-pressure.

4. The Soft Resource

When to use: You have a useful asset that matches their problem.

{First}, made a short breakdown on {topic} for {their role} — not selling anything, just figured it might be useful given what you're working on. Want me to send it?

Why it works: Permission-based. Easy yes/no. No link until they ask.

5. The Honest Curiosity

When to use: When you genuinely want their take.

Hey {First}, quick one — how are you currently handling {specific workflow} at {Company}? Asking because I keep getting asked the same thing and your setup looks different.

Why it works: Compliment + question. Most people answer real questions about their own work.

6. The Mutual Reference

When to use: You share a connection they'd recognize.

Hey {First}, {Mutual} and I were talking about people doing interesting work in {space} and your name came up. Wanted to introduce myself properly — what are you focused on this quarter?

Why it works: Borrows trust. Opens with a forward-looking question.

7. The Specific Compliment

When to use: Something on their profile genuinely stands out.

{First}, the way you positioned {specific thing on profile} is the clearest version of that I've seen. How'd you land on it?

Why it works: Specific praise = real. Asking 'how' invites a story.

8. The Hiring Signal

When to use: Their company just opened a relevant role.

Hey {First}, saw {Company} is hiring for {role}. I help {their role} hit the same outcome without adding headcount — happy to share what's working with similar teams if useful.

Why it works: Hiring = buying signal. Offers a lens, not a pitch.

9. The Event Tie-In

When to use: You attended the same event, webinar, or LinkedIn Live.

{First}, caught {event} too. The bit on {topic} from {speaker} stuck with me — curious whether you're applying any of that yet at {Company}?

Why it works: Shared context. Ends in a question about them, not you.

10. The Direct Ask (Done Right)

When to use: When you've earned the right to ask for time.

{First}, won't dance around it — I help {their role} with {specific outcome}. Worth a 15-min call to see if it applies to {Company}? Totally fine if not.

Why it works: Direct beats clever. The opt-out makes it feel low-pressure.

11. The Re-Engage

When to use: Connected months ago, never spoke.

Hey {First}, we connected a while back and I never followed up properly. Quick reintro: I work with {their role} on {problem}. What's actually on your plate right now?

Why it works: Owns the silence. Resets the relationship without weirdness.

12. The Question That Sells For You

When to use: When your offer answers a specific pain.

{First}, one question: if {specific painful outcome} kept happening at {Company}, what would you try next? Asking because that's literally the thing I work on.

Why it works: Their answer qualifies them. If they engage, the pitch writes itself.
